When you wear In the Dark merchandise, you're not just showing support for the podcast. You're wearing something that reflects the same attention to detail we bring to our reporting. Our listeners often ask about the quality of our apparel. Here is a look behind the scenes at what goes into every shirt, hoodie, and hat.
Materials and Fabric Selection
We start with fabric because it is the foundation of any garment. For our t-shirts, we use 100% ring-spun combed cotton in a 4.3-ounce weight. This is a step above standard 4.0-ounce shirts. Ring-spun cotton feels softer against the skin and holds up better to repeated washing. The combing process removes shorter fibers and leaves only the long, strong ones. That means less pilling and a smoother print surface.
Our hoodies are made from a 50-50 cotton-polyester blend with a 250 GSM (grams per square meter) fleece. This weight balances warmth without being too bulky. The cotton provides breathability and a soft hand feel, while the polyester adds durability and resists shrinking. We chose a mid-weight fleece so you can wear it in three seasons.
No one at our team liked the scratchy, stiff fabric that cheap promotional shirts use. So we tested 12 different blank shirts before settling on our current supplier. The result is a shirt that feels broken in from the first day you wear it.
Print and Embroidery Quality
For screen-printed designs, we use water-based inks instead of plastisol. Water-based inks soak into the fabric fibers rather than sitting on top. This creates a softer hand feel that won't crack or peel as easily. The trade-off is that water-based inks require more careful curing, but our printing partner has been doing this for 15 years. All prints go through a heat press at 320 degrees Fahrenheit for exactly 45 seconds to ensure adhesion.
Our embroidery work is done with a 12-head Tajima machine, which allows precise stitching. For hats and patches, we use a minimum of 7,500 stitches per design element. That level of density prevents gaps and gives a crisp, professional look. The thread is 100% polyester for colorfastness. We also use a tear-away backing that is removed after stitching, so there is no stiffness on the back of embroidered areas.
Before a design goes into production, we run what we call a strike-off: a single print on the actual fabric. We check color accuracy, placement, and alignment. This step catches issues before any bulk run.
Durability Testing and Care
We put our apparel through real-world testing before approving it for sale. A sample shirt is washed 10 times in a home machine using warm water and tumble-dried on medium. After each wash, we measure dimensions, check for fading, and look for loose threads. Our acceptable tolerance for shrinkage is 3% in length and width. Most shirts come in under 2%.
We also test for color transfer. We rub the print with a white cloth under wet and dry conditions. If any ink transfers, the design fails. This is a standard industry test, but we apply it to every colorway.
To help your gear last longer, we recommend washing inside out in cold water and hanging to dry. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. With proper care, the print will maintain its vibrancy for hundreds of washes. Some of our team members have test shirts that have been through 50+ washes and still look great.
Customer Feedback and Reviews
Our customers are our best quality inspectors. We read every review and take note of recurring themes. One common piece of feedback is that our fit is consistent. Unlike some merchandise where sizing varies wildly by design, we use the same blanks for all our tees, so a size L fits the same whether it has a graphic on the front or back.
Another frequent comment is about the softness of the fabric. Many customers tell us they expected a typical stiff shirt and were surprised at how comfortable it is out of the bag. That is the direct result of our fabric choice and printing process.
We also hear from listeners who have had their merch for over a year and say it still holds up. That is the kind of testimonial we value most. It tells us that the time we spend on material selection, printing trials, and wash tests is worth it.
